Tension! As Religious Crisis Sprouted In Osun School

Tension, yesterday, enveloped a popular school in Osun State, the Baptist High School, Iwo, as the students wore different dresses that suited their religious inclination to school.
The students, thereby, defiled the state government uniform specification recently introduced in all public secondary schools in the state as part of the schools reclassification programme.

Apart from the riotous outfits, the students also sang different religious songs while on the assembly for the morning devotion.
While the Christian students who wore white garments sang Christian songs, the Muslim students who appeared in veil sang Muslim songs.

Worried by the development, the school authority hurriedly sent the students to their various classrooms and informed the state Ministry of Education of the development.

Reacting, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Sunday Akere said government was aware of the development and was making efforts to bring sanity back to the system.
He said officials of the state Ministry of Education have been drafted to the school to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Good News: The Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED) , Ijaniki reduces tuition fees

The Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Otto- Ijaniki, Lagos, has reviewed downward its tuition fees following protest by students on the recent hike.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos, the college’s Spokesman, Mr Odunayo Adebowale, said management and the students’ representatives had met with the state government.

“Both parties have resolved the disputes, it was jointly agreed to reduce the tuition fee from N120,000 to N95,000,“ he said.

The students of AOCOED on Monday protested over hike in the tuition fees and the delay in the release of their first semester results among other demands.

The protest came few weeks after the protest by students of the Lagos State University (LASU) over similar grievance of hike in school fees.

The management and representatives of the students met on February 3 with the Directorate of Higher Education in charge of Tertiary Institutions to resolve the disputes.

According to him, the protest is uncalled for because the management has begun the process of resolving the disputes before some students decided to demonstrate.

Adebowale said no life was lost during the protest as security agents promptly arrived at the scene to calm the situation, adding that normalcy had returned to the campus.

“The school was not shutdown, some students barricaded the gates and their actions made other students to flee from the campus, “ he said.

However, a member of the Students’ Parliamentary Council, Mariam Salami, told NAN that the protest became necessary because most students were yet to pay their fees due to the hike.

She said that the union had made several consultations to resolve the disputes with the management which demoralised the students and that pushed us to a peaceful demonstration.

She said that the obstruction of movement on Lagos-Badagry Expressway resulted to traffic gridlock, while students fled the campus for fear of the unknown. (NAN)

Asuu Update: 4 of The Striking Lecturers Wants 4 Months Salary

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU, has said that the 4month old strike would only be called off if the federal government pays them their four month salary arrears since the inception of the strike as well as the full implementation of the N1.2trillion federal govt proposed funding for public universities with the immediate release of N100billion this year. Finally!!! ASUU Gets A Better Deal of N1.1trillion From Jonathan

Details of the Monday/Tuesday marathon meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have begun to emerge.

“The meeting should be the longest that we have ever had on this crisis but I can tell you that both parties were frank all through the discussions.

“The parties also showed commitment towards ending the crisis. The President in particular showed that he was serious about ending the strike and that was why he offered to release over N1tn to the universities in the next five years.”

Punch gathered on Tuesday evening that a key component of the agreement reached by the parties was that the Federal Government would inject N1.1tn into public universities in the next five years. A reliable source, who made this known, also hinted that the strike would be called off anytime next week. He said the government team which was led by President Goodluck Jonathan would release N220bn yearly into the sector beginning from 2014.


The source added, “The money will be released on a yearly basis at N220bn per annum beginning from 2014. For the outgoing year, the government will only release N100bn and this has been processed.” He said that the government, in order to show its commitment to a fresh pact, accepted that “the fund (N1.1tn) should domiciled at the Central Bank of Nigeria” “The money will be released on a quarterly basis to the universities.


So, there won’t be any problem about funding the deal,” the source said. The National Universities Commission and the Trade Union Congress, according to him, are joint guarantors of the agreement while the Minister of Education will be the implementation officer.


 The source said that the government agreed among other things, to revamp the public universities by ensuring that all those issues that always led to strike were dealt with once and for all. It was learnt that the negotiating team of ASUU led by Dr. Nassir Faggae met on Tuesday to further deliberate on the deal.

An Inspirational Story Of The Best Graduating Student of Bells University

When Aishat Farooq gained admission into the University of Ilorin at 15, to study Zoology, little did she know that she was not going to be an alumnus of the institution. That was in 2003.

Despite the fact that she was a high flyer in her first two years in UNILORIN, the now 25-year-old indigene of Ilorin West-Local Government Area of Kwara State got distracted along the line. She played the campus love game and got a shocking result: she got pregnant.

It was in 2006 and in her third year. She was pregnant for a fellow student whom she had been dating. She was disappointed in herself and thought the whole world was crashing on her. Yet, she vowed not to terminate the pregnancy.

Although she wanted to continue her studies in the university, she became disillusioned and dropped out at 18. She sought consolation in trading.

But her father, Mr. Shehu Farooq, who believed that his daughter’s academic prowess should not be wasted, was determined to get her back on the academic track.

Today, Aishat has a different story to tell. On Saturday, she stood tall among her peers at the 5th convocation ceremony of Bells University, Ota, Ogun State, where she emerged the overall best graduating student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.93.

“The rebel in me won,” she declared while giving the valedictory address on behalf of the 208 graduating students of the university.

“I hope my story will inspire at least one person to change his or her circumstance. I was pregnant at 18 and by 19 I was already a mother. I had disappointed my father who believed so much in me. He had such big dreams for me and feared the dreams would become unfulfilled,” she added.

Breaking the news of the pregnancy to her father, who was at the time based in the northern part of the country, was not easy. Aishat’s mother, Fatima, who stayed in Lagos with the family, did not break the “sad news” to the man until the lady was almost due. The mum feared her husband would be too angry.

Fatima narrated to our correspondent, “Looking back, we knew her to be very brilliant. But all of a sudden she got pregnant. Though her father and I were always discussing on the telephone, I hid it from him. Whenever he said he would be coming to Lagos to visit us, I would quickly chip it in that I would like to be the one to visit. So, I ensured I was the one always visiting him.

“That was how I managed the situation until the pregnancy was eight months. But even when we broke the news to him, he felt really bad. Although there was nothing he could do, he couldn’t go out for three days.”

Aishat studied Business Administration with specialisation in Human Resources Management, and received the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for the Overall Best Graduating Student with a cash reward of N50,000 and a plaque. She also won the College of Management Sciences Prize and Department of Business Administration Prize for the Best Graduating Student.

Speaking with our correspondent after she received the awards, Aishat, whose face beamed with smiles, expressed gratitude to her dad for not losing hope in her during her trying time.

She noted that the popularly-held notion that the child that goes astray belongs to the mother, while the good ones belong to the father, was not applicable in her situation as her father did not give up on her.

Asked why her dad had so much hoped in her, she stated that her history of academic excellence from childhood right to the university was a major driving force.

Aishat, who attended Nazareth Nursery and Primary School, Lagos; Penny International College, Lagos and Model Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja, said she bagged several academic awards while growing up and noted that she secured admission to UNILORIN the same year she completed her secondary education.

She noted, “I did exceptionally well and bagged awards in the schools I attended. I had the overall best result at the Senior Secondary School Certificate level at Model Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja. In fact in UNILORIN, I was on the first class grade in my first year but in 200 Level, I dropped to second class upper division because I had already started getting distracted by the boys.

“It just happened that things turned out the way it did. But here I am, a product of God’s unending mercies, unconditional love and grace – all coupled with the faith my dad had in me and my fierce determination.

“I’m a goal getter. I push myself hard. Even here (BELLSTECH) in spite of being a mother, I was pushing for the best despite the challenges. I wanted to make my dad proud again. Once you are determined, nothing is impossible. Nothing can stop you.”

She said her decision to study Business Administration as against the sciences, which she was studying in UNILORIN, was informed by her two-year experience in the world of business after she dropped out of university.

She explained that incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, however, informed her decision to attend a private university. “Age was no longer on my side and I wanted to do it fast. And my dad could afford it because he was a businessman,” she added.

Asked if she was involved in any relationship at the Bells, she explained that she was a popular “snob” on campus because the majority of male students were younger than her. Besides, she did not want to get distracted or disappoint her parents and herself again.

Aishat, who has been posted to Lagos State to observe the mandatory National Youth Service Corps scheme, said, “If you ask around you will be told that I was a snob. My favourite spot was my room. I rarely went out of the room for social events. I went to mosque. However, when I contested for the president of my departmental association, Business Administration Students Association, the Nigerian system worked against me.

“I lost to my male opponent. Although I had plans to take some giant strides if I won, especially in the academic aspect for my fellow students, the fact that I was not the type of person who hangs out worked against me. I didn’t have a social life.”

She said she has no plans for marriage for now. She wants to pursue a master’s degree programme in Human Resources in the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. She added that she also plans to work in a corporate environment to garner experience and afterwards go back to the university to teach “as a way of giving back.”

The second child in a family of eight children, Aishat brought her six-year-old son, Damilola, to the convocation. It was, however, learnt that the Edo State-born father of the boy has since got married to another woman.

She noted that her major challenge on campus was the randomness of classes which denied her the opportunity of spending quality time with her son while her stay in the university lasted.

“We had visiting professors who came into the campus at anytime. Although we had schedules, many of them had a bit of flexible time. Sometimes on Sunday when I took permission to visit my child in Lagos, my classmates would call me up on the phone that there was going to be a class. Because attendance is very important, I had to rush down. This affected me a little,” she added.

Aishat’s father advised parents to give their children and wards the best of tutelage and close monitoring. He noted that he least expected the feat achieved by his daughter as he was at a time disturbed that “she could no longer make it.”

Asked if it was lack of adequate monitoring that made Aishat go astray at UNILORIN, he said, “Let’s just say that is how God wants it. You see, 70 per cent of the fault is on us the parents. Parents should give their children good supervision and tutelage. With this, they cannot derail. I thank God for her because it’s is not easy to have raised her from grass to grace.

“I screamed on the phone the day I learnt she was pregnant. I started asking questions: When, where and how. I burst into tears. But today, she is a new being. And I know the mistake will not repeat itself. My expectations for her are that she should fly higher and higher.”

Some other graduands who distinguished themselves were also recognised at the convocation ceremony.

Kolawole Lawal, who finished from the Department of Economics with a CGPA of 4.73, received the Olusegun Obasanjo’s Prize for being the best graduating student with outstanding academic performance and leadership qualities. Former President Obasanjo who is the Chief Promoter of the university, also attended the event.

Francis Sogunle, from the Department of Computer Science, who had a CGPA of 4.74, received the Chancellor’s Prize for excelling in external competitions of academic nature.

At the ceremony, 208 students were awarded first degrees with Aishat and 13 others being conferred with first class degrees, while 64 of them got second class upper degrees; 83 bagged second class lower; just as 43 were awarded third class degrees. Meanwhile four of the graduands finished with pass degrees.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Isaac Adeyemi, charged the graduates to be patriotic and dedicated to nation building.

“Our beloved country is currently going through a rather stressful period. All hands must be on deck to seek lasting solutions to militancy and insurgencies and disregard for the rule of law. This is the time to prove your worth as you can’t afford to fold your arms or sit on the fence,” he observed.

BREAKING NEWS: President Jonathan Seek To End ASUU Strike

There have been many indications that after today's meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the four month strike of the lecturers may finally end.

A closed-door meeting has started on Monday at 2:40 pm inside the First Lady Conference Room, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

It has in attendance the President, Vice President, Namadi Sambo; Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim; Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike; and Minister of Labour, Emeka Wogu among others.

The ASUU is presented by its Chairman, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge, Prof. Abdulahi Sule-Kano, Prof. Dipo Fashina and Prof. Festus Iyayi, Prof. Suleiman Abdul, and Prof. Abdullahi Sule-Kano. President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulawahid Omar and that of the Trade Union Congress, Bobboi Kaigama, are also there.

Indication that the strike that is now into its 5th month may be resolved has emerged when the President stated, while shaking hands with Fagge:

"My president, I hope it will end today. Our children have suffered enough. We must find a solution."
All those in attendance responded with a loud "amen."

When greeting the NLC President, Abdulwahab Omar, Jonathan said:
"My president with you around today, there will be no problem, our agreement is signed, sealed and delivered."

This is the first meeting between the lecturers and Jonathan since the beginning of the strike. The Presidency took over negotiations with the striking lecturers September 19, with the Vice-President Namadi Sambo spearheading the FG side.

The lecturers were seen meeting among themselves in their bus during the break that has started at 6.30 pm. No details of there discussion have been yet made known.

It will be recalled, that ASUU has embarked upon an indefinite strike July 1, 2013. The lecturers protest against an alleged FG’s failure to honor an agreement signed between the govenment and ASUU in 2009 pertaining to issues of university funding and improvement of infrastructure in the sector. So far all the attempts to come to an agreement between the FG and ASUU have been fruitless.

A Letter From ASUU to The FG- We’ll Go Back to Lecture Rooms When you Honour the 2009 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has turned down President Goodluck Jonathan’s plea for the lecturers to end their 114-day-old strike.

The Chairman of ASUU at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Adegbola Akinola, and his University of Ibadan chapter counterpart, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, said university teachers would only return to the classrooms if the government honoured the 2009 agreement it entered into with them.

They spoke just as the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, berated the union, saying it had taken unionism to an all time low.

But Akinola told journalists during a rally staged by members of the union in Ile-Ife on Monday, that Jonathan needed not beg for the strike to be called off.

He said, “ASUU does not need any plea from Mr. President. We are not asking for impossible things. The Federal Government reached an agreement with us and we are asking them to honour it. It is so simple.

“Government should be honourable. Is it honourable not to honour an agreement? Certainly no. The Federal Government should not allow the public universities to continue to degenerate. Posterity will not forgive us if we allow public universities to totally collapse.

“Our country has the resources to honour the agreement but education is not given priority.

“The Minister of Aviation (Mrs Stella Oduah) just got two bulletproof cars bought for N255m by an agency under her supervision. So, who do you want to tell that this country does not have the resources?

“We won’t allow public universities to be destroyed. That is why they are establishing private universities all over the country with the nation’s money. Except those owned by the missionaries, tell me which of the private universities was not established with the nation’s resources?”

Akinola said that infrastructure were decaying in public universities because of the neglect they had suffered.

He explained that the strike was not about members of the union but a means to force the government to do the right things.

The ASUU chief warned that children from poor homes might no longer have access to university education if the union should succumb to the blackmail being employed against it by the government.

Also Ajiboye said at a town hall meeting and presentation of the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy assessment report to clerics , civil society, labour and students at the Trenchard Hall, UI on Monday, that Jonathan’s plea would not make ASUU end the strike.

He said, “Will the President be quiet if his children are in one of our public institutions and be at home for four months? Does he care about the future of the country while the children of the masses in public institutions have been asking their leader to be more sensitive and patriotic enough to public institutions?

“How many years of appeal will make the President implement a four-year-old agreement? The truth is that we are tired of appeals. We need action .

“In ASUU, our belief is that today’s event will shape the future. We cannot live on appeal while the children of the rich use public funds to study abroad and even make use of government scholarship scheme.”

However, about 200 heavily armed policemen on Monday stopped members of ASUU from carrying out an enlightenment walk on the strike in Calabar, Cross River State.

The walk was organised by the University of Calabar and Cross River State University of Technology branches of ASUU.

It was to take off from the UNICAL gate at 7am through some streets of Calabar, but the policemen ensured the union members did not leave the gate of the institution.

They said they were acting on “orders from above.”

The Chairman ASUU, UNICAL branch, Dr. James Okpiliya, said, “Our union is law- abiding. We wrote to the police and other security agencies on our intention of walking the streets in pursuance of our cause to put the records straight.

“Many groups have been walking the streets giving people the wrong impression about the situation. We just want to put the records straight. The police are telling us that they have orders from above not let us walk the streets of Calabar. It is a shame. You can all see the hypocrisy of government.

“They allowed youths and market women but they would not let us do the same. We would remain resolute. No amount of provocation would stop us.

“We are not on strike because of our salaries. We are fighting for our students and the terrible conditions of our universities. Most of our science students do not know the difference between a Bunsen burner and a stove. They don’t even know the chemicals.

“The Tertiary Education Trust Fund today has become a main funding source of our universities, but this is not to be so. TETFUND is only an intervention agency. Government has bailed out banks and even Nollywood,but not our universities.

“The strike would continue as long as the government remains adamant. The President said after all, the strike in Ghana lasted two years; so that means this one could continue even up to five years.”

The Chairman of ASUU, CRUTECH branch, Dr Nsing Ogar, said the Federal Government must honour the 2009 agreement.

But university administrators in the country on Monday expressed concern over the strike and appealed to both ASUU and the Federal Government to urgently reach a compromise on the issue.

The National President of the Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators, Mr. Samuel Mwansat, made this appeal at the ongoing annual retreat of the National Council Members of the association at the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun in Ogun State.

He stressed that the current disagreement between ASUU and the government required “understanding.”

In Abuja, Okonjo-Iweala, accused ASUU of taking unionism to an all time low with its latest approach to the strike.

She accused the union of introducing politics to the strike through the distribution of “flyers riddled with lies in mosques in the North.”

The minister, in a statement by her Special Adviser, Paul Nwabuikwu, said contrary to the position being spread by ASUU, she had not taken a “take-it-or-leave-it approach” to the face-off between the union and government.

She claimed that it was ASUU that had taken such an approach, saying no government had been as responsive to the demands of the striking lecturers as that of Jonathan.

The statement reads in part, “Contrary to some recent media reports, the Federal Government has not adopted a take-it-or-leave-it approach in its negotiations with ASUU. Rather, the approach is focused on positive engagement and achieving sustainable solutions to the challenges facing higher education in the country.

“That is why President Jonathan recently appealed to ASUU to respond to government’s positive steps by calling off its strike in the interest of suffering students and parents.

“Despite this, for several days now, some elements in ASUU have been distributing pamphlets and flyers with abusive and inflammatory messages against Dr. Okonjo-Iweala in mosques and other places. This is taking academic unionism to a new low and infusing it with unnecessary politics. I am sure majority of ASUU members are not in support of this.”

She said the government was working hard to seek practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing higher education in the country.

According to her, “ The President has made available N100bn a year in the first instance to repair hostels, laboratories and classrooms and other facilities in the universities.

“An offer of N30bn has also been made to ASUU towards the earned allowances of its members.”

This Asuu Strike May Last For Only God Knows,if FG Remains Inflexible- ASUU

ASUU protests hit Ile-Ife, Calabar, Osogbo, Ibadan.

From seminar halls and boardrooms where talks seem to have collapsed, university teachers have moved their battle for better education to the streets.

But, the police are stopping them from holding rallies and marches to convince the public that their four-month old action is right.

In Calabar, the police yesterday stopped a planned protest by lecturers of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) and the Cross River University.

But the lecturers addressed a rally on the UNICAL campus.

University of Ibadan (UI) lecturers had a town hall meeting to sensitise the people to the strike.

In Ile-Ife, Osun State, Obafemi Awolowo University lecturers marched on the streets, getting to the palace of the Ooni of Ife. They urged him to pravail on the government to implement the 2009 agreement it signed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), without which the strike would continue.

President Goodluck Jonathan said during last month’s Presidential Chat that the government cannot fully implement the agreement, especially the financial aspect, because doing so would force a shutdown of other departments.

The Nigeria Labour Congrees (NLC), also yesterday, said although it would not call out workers on a solidarity strike with the lecturers, it would hold a meeting in Kaduna tomorrow to take a stand on the way forward.

No fewer than 200 policemen, most of them heavily armed, stopped ASUU members from carrying out an enlightenment walk in Calabar.

The walk, which was organised by the UNICAL and Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) branches of ASUU, was to take off from the UNICAL gate at 7am and go through some streets of Calabar, but the policemen ensured the teachers did not leave the campus

Okpiliya went on: “We are not on strike because of our salaries. We are fighting for our students and the terrible conditions of our university. Most of our science students do not know the difference between Bunsen burner and a stove. They don’t even know the chemicals.

“The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) today has become a main funding source of our universities, but this is not to be so. TETFUND is only an intervention agency. Government has bailed out banks and even Nollywood, but not our universities.

“The strike would continue as long as the government remains adamant. The President said after all, the strike in Ghana lasted two years, so that means this one can continue even up to five years.

“It is a shame for the President to say the strike is political. The strike is not political. We are fighting for the good of our people. If there is anything political about this it is by him Jonathan. Let him implement the agreement and if the strike continues then he can say it is political. Any government that does not pay attention to the education sector is a dead government.”

The Chairman of ASUU, CRUTECH branch, Dr Nsing Ogar, said the Federal Government must honour the agreement.

A former president of ASUU and renowned author, Prof Festus Iyayi, said a government that does not respect agreements is calling for anarchy.

He said: “This is the final struggle. Even if it takes 10 years, the students should know we are struggling on their behalf. A day would come when the police would join us. A day would come when we would not care whether the police would stop or not. The state has failed.”

Another lecturer from UNICAL said: “If the strike is called off today, everybody will be worse off for it. People are not looking at the issues; they are just saying open the school, let the children graduate. Let them go to school. They are not bothered about the quality of education they are getting. In the future, whatever we say the government will never take us seriously.”

OAU chapter Chairman Prof. Peter Akinola, who led the protest, urged the Federal Government to accede to ASUU’s demands to enable the union suspend the industrial action.

Addressing residents at the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Akinola said the education sector deserved a better deal.

A member of the union, Prof. Gbolahan Babalola, said protest was to show the concern of ASUU for undergraduates who had stayed at home for months.

He urged traditional rulers and other stakeholders to resolve the impasse.

The Sarun Oodua, Chief Adekola Adeyeye, who represented the Ooni, praised ASUU for the peaceful conduct and show of concern for students.

Adeyeye said that the Ooni understood that education was the best legacy that any parent or government could bequeath to any child.

He promised that the union’s message would be relayed to the traditional ruler.

The OAU lecturers moved round major streets of Ile-Ife. Osun State University teachers staged their rally at the newly built Freedom Square near Old Garage in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The Ile-Ife rally, which kicked off from the Oduduwa Hall of the OAU caused a traffic gridlock for many hours in the ancient town.

Osun State University branch Chairman Dr. Joseph Abiona was worried over the misinformation being dished out to Nigerians by the Federal Government as reason for the strike.

The NLC said it was in the process of mediating between the Federal Government and ASUU.

Oyo State NLC Chairman Comrade Bashiru Olarewaju spoke at a town hall meeting organised by ASUU to review the strike. The meeting was held at the Trenchard Hall of the University of Ibadan (UI).

At the Town Hall meeting were hundreds of people, including civil society groups’ members, politicians, the clergy, traders who were presented with slide of the NEEDS ASSESSMENT REPORT of 2009 .

The NLC, according to Olarewaju , will meet tomorrow in Kaduna to take a decisive action on the ASUU strike.

He said: “The government and some other people have been trying to undermine the power, the influence and the ability of each group that can salvage this nation from collapse . And let me say this, that NLC has not been quiet. No, many people will want the NLC to go on strike. No; we will not go on strike on ASUU for now. But, anything can happen after Wednesday. This is because we have more than 40 affiliates. If an affiliate of NLC is in crisis and we now bring the entire workforce to join the strike, the train of the nation will not move forward. What we do in most cases is to mediate. ASUU is an affiliate of the NLC. ASUU is our partner. We will work together ,” the NLC chair said.

Prof. Remi Raji, Dean, Faculty of Arts, UI, said: “The way forward is for the government to look at the NEEDS ASSESSMENT report, which was presented to the government in November, 2012.

“In the next few days, it will be one year and nothing has been done of the 189 recommendations and we are saying that it is very crucial for government to deal with it squarely for the future of our children and our nation because a country that does not develop its own capacity within, to develop its own education standard to world class quality, cannot claim to be a giant of Africa, cannot claim to have a clean bill of economic health . This is the issue.”

UI chapter Chairman Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye said the appeal by President Jonathan to be patriotic is not needed but action and implementation of the agreement reached with the union.

He said it was sad that a President who claimed that corruption is not Nigeria’s problem can watch a Minister buy bullet proof vehicles for N255million, yet claiming there is no money to fund education.

He berated the President for speaking out publicly on the ongoing strike close to four months after it began, maintaining that he has not been patriotic and sensitive enough to the needs of the majority of Nigerians.

He said: “Will it have been possible for Mr. President to be quiet if his children are in one of our public institutions and be at home for four months? “How many years of appeal will make Mr. President implement a four year old agreement? The truth is we are tired of appeal. We need action. “

The Chairman of ASUU, Niger Delta University (NDU), Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, Dr. Beke Sese, said the strike is to save the universities from collapse.

He maintained that the strike had no political undertone and not targeted at Jonathan or his administration.

Sese told reporters in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, that the industrial action was to protest the deplorable condition of public universities.

“Imputing political motive to the strike is a calculated attempt by some persons to deploy propaganda gimmicks to the cause of the university teachers, in order to divert attention from the real issues that informed the strike,” Sese said, adding:

“When the current Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, was ASUU president, the members did not compromise, when there was similar strike, during the regime of the late Gen. Sani Abacha.

“This is the first time that ASUU members have embarked on a protracted strike, which centres on funding of the universities and improvement of the infrastructure. The funds so far released by the Federal Government are grossly inadequate. The 2009 agreement must be fully implemented.”

Obafemi Martins and His Wife gave Birth to a bouncing Baby Boy

Ace footballer Obafemi Martins has welcomed his third child from his third baby mama. Abigail Barwuah, the older sister of Italian footballer Mario Balotelli gave birth to a baby boy on Wednesday October 16th in Italy.

25 year old Abigail, who has been dating Obafemi since 2012, lost the first pregnancy we all reported last year. She was about four months pregnant when she was in Nigeria with Obafemi in December 2012 but lost the baby and got pregnant again almost immediately.

The never-before-married Obafemi has a son with an African chick he dated in Italy many years ago, he also has a 3 and a half year old son with a white chick he dated while playing in the UK and now a son with Abigail. Father of all nation. Hehe. Congrats to Abigail and Obafemi!
